Welcome New Year and New Day with Joy and Hope!
Rev. Abraham Kim (GAPCP Moderator)
“The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, : Son of the man, can these bones live?” I said, “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones here the word of the Lord! This what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones; I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know I am the Lord.’”So I prophesied as I Commended. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, an! d tendons and fresh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” So I prophesied as he commended me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet a vast army.”
Bright New Year is today! Let’s send confusion and agony of yesterday to past, and welcome the new day shining with the glory of Zion filled with joy and hope. This New Year, God will open ways for our nation, church, family and each individual to live again.
Like the stars to light a dark night, God lights this dark age with man of God, and through Him He makes new history for the future. This is the history of hope.
Ezekiel was chosen by God to shine like a star in the dark night. During that time Ezekiel was in hopeless situation. His country was invaded by Babylonians, and Ezekiel lost his wife after becoming a captive himself. This situation was hopeless for both for the country and Ezekiel himself. But even in this hopeless situation God puts his powerful hand on Ezekiel. The name Ezekiel means “God made him strong”. God uses Ezekiel to strengthen the people of Israel and shows them how to live again just like his name.
First, God shows Ezekiel a valley filled with many dry bones. What do dry bones stand for? It stands for death. Even if we, the human beings, are made in the image of God, but if there is no spirit we are lifeless like manequins. Dry bones also mean lack of hope. There is no hope in dead things. And the dry bones are scattered all around and separated from each other. Also, dry bone means state of no feelings. Try to go to a tomb and cheer up the dead through compliments. Does the dead person come alive again because it feels good? No! It doesn’t get angry either even if you say a bad word. It is dead and the dead has no feelings.
God strongly said to Israel who had no hope, no spirit and no feelings just like these scattered dry bones that “You will live”.
How can the dry bones be made alive? It is through God’s word. As Ezekiel did as he was commanded by God, the tendon and flesh appeared and covered the dry bones.
And as he delivered the second command, the breath came to them from all around.
At first when Ezekiel was passing through valley, It was filled with dry bones, but when word of God entered the breath and wind of hope came from all around. Hopelessness used to fill the valley, but now it was full of life and hope. The dry bones rose up and became a great big army. There was great reversal because of the Word of God. The Word of God has power to raise up a dead person, breath in hope to the hopeless and give feelings back to the ones with no feelings. The word of God is the power of God. (Romans 1:17) Here the word ‘power’ is called ‘Dunamis’ in Greek. “Dunamis” is the source of the word Dynamite. The word of God is powerful like Dynamite. With His word, he breaks down harden minds of people and softens them like breaking down a mountain.
He makes the impossible possible. That is why, when the word of God comes down to this country, during this time of economic and political difficulty, our country can live again. Because of your God.
When the church goes back to gospel and preaches the word of God, the church will live again as great church. That is when the church finally shows the world it’s power. When every family teaches word of God and puts it into the hearts of their children and their hearts, their family and each individual will live.
Let us not go ahead of the word of God. I hope that you will have faith that the Word of God is hope and life in every hopeless situation filled with dry bones. We can always live when we hang on to the word of God.
In this new year, we all should put more interest and pray more for our General Assembly.
Let’s make this new year a better year than last year. Let us all come out of darkness and make this new year full of life. I wish all the local churches and our GA to be full of hope like the valley of dry bones where life with came afresh. I hope all PCP local churches will grow and strive to become self-supporting.
For this purpose, I encourage;
1. The ministers in the church must take strong leadership.
2. Church members must have a sense ownership of the church.
3. Everyone pray every day for the church, Sub-presbytery and Presbytery and GAPCP.
Thank you very much. May God bless all of you.
